Mapping for Bicycle Routes?
I love Google Maps. Anytime I am heading somewhere I've never been, I look up the route on Google Maps and figure out the best route, how long it will take, etc. I love that I can drag the blue line--indicating the route--and make a new, more interesting route just like that (snaps fingers).
But, using Google Maps for bicycle routes is more problematic. For one thing, I don't always stick to surface roads when riding. In my town, there are a few bicycle paths that allow me to bypass traffic and get me away from the constant drone of cars. Google has options for public transportation and walking but not bicycling... until today.
Via the Official Google Blog, Google announced that they now provide directions for those of use travelling by bicycle.

As far as I can tell the difference is that it takes hills and traffic in to account (attempting to route around them both). As before, that blue highlighted route is adjustable, just grab onto it with your mouse and drag it where you want to go.
While I don't see any immediate use myself--I know the area around where I live pretty well--I can see it being useful if you were to relocate or visit an unfamiliar town.
Now... is there a way to force it to seek out the biggest hills and form a route including them all?

There are a lot of us outwith the US of A who are interested to see how this new innovation will work out. In these countries there are extensive networks off road cycle routes and we a hoping The new Google bicycling directions will include these routes, something along the lines of CycleStreets. You will notice that this site give three different options with height profiles...
